Malawian preacher and businessman Shepherd Bushiri celebrated his 43rd birthday in grand style, drawing high-level guests from across Africa and beyond to a packed gala dinner where Zambian music star Yo Maps headlined the performances.

The event, held on Saturday night, featured a blend of spiritual tributes and high-energy music, underscoring Bushiri’s influence across the region.

Yo Maps delivered a standout performance, thrilling the audience with some of his biggest hits, including “So Mone,” his collaboration with Malawian rapper Tay Grin, “Bana Pwanya,” on which he was featured by Zambia’s Kell Kay, and closed the night with crowd favourite “Kondwa.”

The electrifying musical lineup also featured the legendary Congolese soukous icon Kanda Bongo Man, who brought the room to its feet with his signature dance rhythms. Guests from across the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Southern Africa and as far as Europe filled the ballroom for the celebration.

Earlier in the evening, former Joyce Banda appeared via a pre-recorded televised message, wishing Bushiri “long life, strength and continued impact.” Her message drew applause from the audience, many of whom described it as a symbolic gesture of national pride despite Bushiri’s often polarising profile.

A musical group known as the Tribe of Juda also performed, adding a spiritual undertone to the evening in honour of the self-styled prophet.

Born Chipiliro Gama on 20 February 1983, Bushiri—widely known as Major 1—has built a reputation as a self-proclaimed prophet, entrepreneur and author. His following spans multiple countries, with events often attracting regional dignitaries, business figures and religious leaders.

The 43rd birthday celebration, attendees said, reflected both his continental influence and his ability to fuse faith with showmanship.
