Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency warns public after three die from suspected illicit beer in Kalomo

The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has cautioned the public against consuming unregulated beverages following the reported deaths of three people in Kalomo District of Southern Province.

The victims allegedly consumed an illicit beer suspected to have been made from methylated spirit, fertilizer, and tyre mending solution — substances that are not intended for human consumption.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, ZCSA Acting Manager for Communications and Public Relations, Onishias Maamba, said the Agency was working with other state institutions to investigate the incident.

Maamba warned that consuming such beverages can cause severe damage to vital organs including the kidneys, heart, and eyes, and may result in poisoning or death.

He urged consumers to purchase beverages only from trusted and certified sources and to avoid products which safety has not been verified by ZCSA.

“ZCSA has noted with sadness the reported deaths of three people in Kalomo District of Southern Province for consuming a suspected illicit beer allegedly made from methylated spirit, fertilizer and tyre mending solution, among other substances not meant for human consumption,” Maamba said.

He added that the Agency, which regulates beverages among other products, had taken a keen interest in the matter and was collaborating with other government institutions to ensure thorough investigations.

Maamba appealed to the public to report any individuals or firms involved in the illegal production and distribution of beverages to the nearest ZCSA office.

“The Agency will intensify enforcement and public education activities on the illegal production and sale of beverages in a quest to enhance consumer safety,” he assured.

Maamba reminded manufacturers, importers, and traders that it was mandatory to obtain authority from the Agency before supplying such products on the market, as required under the Compulsory Standards Act.
