The Zambian government says they are in discussions with Power China Eco-Environmental Group Limited to explore joint initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainable environmental management and expanding green energy solutions in the country.
Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Principal Public Relations Officer, Harriet Chimuka, said the two parties are considering the development of a pilot project to showcase innovative waste-to-energy technologies.
A delegation led by Andy Yu, Vice President for Power China in the East–Southern Africa region, paid a courtesy call on Permanent Secretary Dr. Douty Chibamba in Lusaka on Saturday, where the proposed collaboration was outlined.
Chimuka said the planned pilot project would demonstrate practical solutions for generating energy while advancing environmental protection efforts.
“The proposed pilot project is expected to serve as a demonstration of how waste-to-energy technologies can contribute to Zambia’s green economy agenda while promoting energy generation,” she said.

During the meeting, government officials and the Chinese firm also examined the potential introduction of advanced incinerators capable of completely reducing waste to ash, thereby minimising environmental impact.
The discussions further explored the possibility of using incinerator ash as a raw material for fertilizer production—an approach that would support a circular economy by linking waste management with agricultural productivity.
“The meeting underscored the shared commitment of both parties to promote sustainable development through innovative environmental solutions,” Chimuka added.
Other areas identified for potential cooperation include pollution reduction, ecological balance, sustainable land-use practices, soil conservation, and rehabilitation of degraded areas—particularly those damaged by mining activities.
The two sides also discussed initiatives to protect water bodies, improve water quality, and promote efficient water utilisation.
