Zambia Premier League lifts ZESCO United suspension after court case is withdrawn

The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has lifted the suspension imposed on ZESCO United following a mutual agreement by both parties to withdraw a court case that had triggered disciplinary action.

In a statement released on Tuesday, ZPL Head of Communications Christina Zulu confirmed that the suspension had been removed with immediate effect. She also announced that ZESCO United’s Week 20 fixture against Green Eagles will proceed as originally scheduled.

“The ZPL looks forward to the amicable resolution of all outstanding matters and the smooth progression of the league,” Zulu stated.

ZESCO United was suspended last week after the league ruled that the club had violated football regulations by taking a football-related dispute to an ordinary court, contrary to internal dispute-resolution procedures required by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) constitution.

In a letter dated Friday—circulated via the Zambia Monitor Facebook page—ZPL Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chimpampwe said the club had ignored repeated guidance instructing it to use football’s internal mechanisms.

Chimpampwe wrote:

“In previous correspondence, your club was explicitly advised to refrain from referring football-related disputes to ordinary courts and instead follow the established internal dispute-resolution mechanism.”

He added that ZPL had learnt that ZESCO United had “proceeded to engage the ordinary courts” despite the directive.

The dispute arose after ZESCO’s removal from the ABSA Cup, with their slot allocated to FC MUZA—a decision the Ndola-based side challenged through legal action.

Following the withdrawal of the case, ZPL has now reversed the suspension, clearing the way for ZESCO United’s full reinstatement into all Premier League activities.
