Zambia Premier League suspends ZESCO United over court action

0

The Zambia Premier League has suspended ZESCO United from participating in the MTN Super League with immediate effect after the club took a football dispute to an ordinary court.

In a letter dated Friday and posted on the Zambia Monitor Facebook page, ZPL Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Chimpampwe, said the club had ignored repeated guidance to avoid ordinary courts and to follow football’s internal dispute-resolution mechanisms.

“In previous correspondence, your club was explicitly advised to refrain from referring football-related disputes to ordinary courts and instead follow the established internal dispute-resolution mechanism,” Chimpampwe wrote.

“It has come to our attention that ZESCO FC has not complied with the directive and has proceeded to engage the ordinary courts in this matter,” he said.

ZESCO reportedly took legal action after being removed from the ABSA Cup, with their slot given to FC MUZA.

Chimpampwe said that in line with the Football Association of Zambia constitution and league regulations, ZPL had resolved to suspend ZESCO United from all Premier League activities.

As a result, all remaining fixtures involving the club have been suspended pending the conclusion of the court case.

ZESCO United has been advised that it may appeal the decision.
