The Zambian government has denied media reports claiming it had terminated the maize export deal with Malawi over payment issues.
A letter allegedly authored and signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, circulated on social media and was published by a local tabloid on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, described the letter as “fake, misleading, and malicious.”
“The purported letter and accompanying claims are a product of deliberate misinformation and negative propaganda, and the public is urged to treat them with the contempt they deserve,” Mweetwa said.

He clarified that the maize export arrangement between Zambia and Malawi remained intact, with both governments continuing to cooperate regionally.
“The public is further advised to note that issues regarding the buying and selling of maize do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation but remain the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture,” Mweetwa added.
He urged the public to verify information circulating on social media before sharing and reminded citizens that Zambia had laws governing cyberspace abuse.
“Government remains committed to transparency, regional collaboration, and the promotion of food security within the SADC region,” he said.
