Zambian govt lifts export restrictions on maize, mealie meal

The Government has lifted restrictions on the export of maize grain and maize products, including mealie meal, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Thursday.

Ministry spokesperson, Balewa Zyuulu, said the decision was intended to support farmers and improve market access by allowing producers and processors to sell maize and maize products more competitively within and outside Zambia.

Zyuulu said the policy shift was expected to boost incomes, particularly for small-scale farmers who rely on maize for their livelihoods, and stimulate activity in both agriculture and agro-processing.

He said the Government also expected the change to promote food security through structured and regulated trade.

“All traders, millers, processors and individuals are now free to export maize and related products to any market of their choice, subject to obtaining the required export permits,” he said.

Zyuulu reminded exporters to ensure that documentation was properly processed at designated exit points, including the Konkola Check Point for exports through the Kasumbalesa Border and the respective posts for other routes.

He urged stakeholders to comply with procedures to ensure smooth trade.

Members of the public seeking further information have been advised to contact the Ministry’s Department of Agribusiness and Marketing at district or provincial offices, or at Mulungushi House in Lusaka.
