The Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) says it has made significant progress in preparations for the 2025 Economic Establishment Census (EEC), a key national exercise aimed at capturing vital information on the structure and dynamics of the country’s business sector.

Acting Statistician General, Sheila Mudenda, said the EEC—last conducted in 2011–2012—will provide up-to-date data critical for economic planning, investment decisions, and policy formulation.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, Mudenda revealed that a number of preparatory activities have already been completed.

These included the development of census materials, training of trainers, pretests, and the recruitment of field staff.

“To ensure transparency, ZamStats implemented an online recruitment process, and we appreciate the many candidates who participated. Successful applicants will be notified via bulk SMS,” she said.

She further disclosed that data collection will commence in early September, immediately after field staff training.

The process would involve listing both formal and informal establishments across the country.

“The main output of this census will be a comprehensive Statistical Business Register, which will serve as a cornerstone for evidence-based planning,” she explained, urging businesses, associations, and stakeholders to fully cooperate with enumerators.
