ZEMA reportedly approves 112 Environmental Impact Assessment Reports, projects valued at $700 million

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has reportedly approved 112 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Reports for developmental projects valued at an investment cost of over US$700 million.

Among the notable projects approved is the proposed electrification of Lavushimanda and surrounding areas in Lavushimanda District by the Rural Electrification Authority at a cost of over US$649,000.

ZEMA Manager for Corporate Affairs, Ruth Kamwi, confirmed this in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.

The project involves the electrification of Lavushimanda’ s Central Business District, Kapengwe Primary School, Salamo Primary School, Salamo Day Secondary School, Salamo Rural Health Centre, and Surrounding Areas.

Under infrastructure development, ZEMA approved the proposed Expansion of Chirundu One Stop Border Post in Chirundu District, by Borders Consortium Limited at a cost of over US$27 million.

“The expansion aims at reducing delays, improve border security, and enhance trade efficiency, benefiting both Zambia and Zimbabwe as the project covers both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the border,” Kamwi said.

She stated that the approvals were done at the 34th meeting of the Environmental Assessment Committee held on OK I’m coming July 31, 2025.

Other approved projects by sector, include: 65 in Mining and Mineral Processing, 18 in Energy, 10 in Infrastructure Development, 14 in Manufacturing and Processing, and 5 in Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism.

“These projects demonstrate ZEMA’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and environmental management in Zambia,” Kamwi states.
