AFCON: Angola leads Group D, as Tunisia earns first point with dramatic comeback against Mali

Angola has taken the lead in group D after beating Mauritania 2-3 at Stade Bouaké stadium.

After locking horns in a 1-1 standoff with Algeria on Matchday 1 in Group D, Angola was fueled by determination to orchestrate a rebound to increase their chances of securing a spot in the AFCON 2023 last 16.

Angola initially took the lead against Mauritania, but Sidy Amar’s 43rd minute goal leveled the score at 1-1 before halftime.

In the second half, Gelson Dala scored twice and Gilberto added another for Angola.

Aboubakary Koïta’s strike in the 58th minute narrowed the gap, but Angola secured victory.

The Palancas Negras lead Group D with 4 points, tied with Burkina Faso, while Algeria and Mauritania follow with 2 and 0 points, respectively.

Meanwhile an almost win for Burkina Faso saw Algeria’s comeback with a dramatic late goal from Baghdad Bounedjah, securing a 2-2 draw.

Despite Bertrand Traore’s penalty for Burkina Faso appearing to seal the win, Bounedjah, who had earlier equalized for Algeria, scored his second in added time, concluding an astonishing match.

Furthermore, Tunisia earned their inaugural point at the Africa Cup of Nations by staging a comeback to secure a 1-1 draw against Mali in their second Group E encounter at Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium.

This draw puts Mali in the lead with 4 points followed by Namibia with 3 point and Tunisia 1 while south Africa lays with 0 points.
