Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, says 27 people have been arrested in connection with the stoning of President Hakainde Hichilema when he addressed traders at the gutted Chiwempala Market last Saturday.

Speaking during a media briefing in Chingola on Tuesday, Mwiimbu said significant progress had been made in investigations aimed at bringing to book the unruly mob that disrupted the President’s address to marketeers.

The minister conducted an on-the-spot tour of Chiwempala Market before meeting journalists.

“The 27 individuals are suspected of having participated in the riot and arson incident,” he said.

Mwiimbu added that those in custody include individuals who allegedly stole a carpet and poles from a tent designated as a presidential holding room during the event.

He said investigations had established leads that would help police and other law enforcement agencies trace those who orchestrated the riot and arson at the market.

During his visit, Mwiimbu reportedly received a message of apology from the traders, delivered through their chairperson, Christopher Chiwasha.

Chiwasha expressed regret over the incident, saying it occurred while President Hichilema was sympathizing with the traders who had lost their stalls in the fire.

He said the marketeers had pledged to work with the government to rebuild Chiwempala Market and ensure such an incident did not reoccur.
