The Zambia National Football Team’s 2026 FIFA World Cup dream ended on a disappointing note after suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Niger in their final Group E qualifier at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Sunday.
Niger’s Ghana-born striker, Daniel Sosah, scored the decisive goal in the 56th minute to silence the home crowd and seal a memorable double over Chipolopolo, having also won the first leg 2–1 in Morocco.
The result denied Zambia a chance to finish the campaign on a high after their 1–0 win over Tanzania last Wednesday.
For Niger, the victory was a statement of intent, propelling them to 15 points from eight matches and reinforcing their growing status on the continental stage.

Despite already being out of contention for a World Cup berth, Chipolopolo were eager to close the campaign with pride.
However, Avram Grant’s side struggled to convert opportunities and their defense was repeatedly tested by Niger’s organized and disciplined play.
Zambia’s campaign was marked by flashes of promise but ultimately marred by inconsistency.
The defeat leaves them fourth in Group E with nine points, behind leaders Morocco (21 points), Niger (15), and Tanzania (10), while Congo Brazzaville trail with just one point.
For the home side, Sunday’s match was a bitter reminder of missed chances but also a lesson to regroup and rebuild ahead of future continental competitions.
