Vice President WK Mutale Nalumango has called for the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund established during the Conference of All Parties 27.

Nalumango made the call during the just ended Mid-term Review of the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction meeting in the United States of America.

This is according to a statement issued by Namatama Njekwa, the First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Permanent Mission of Zambia to the United Nations.

The Loss and Damage Fund aims to provide financial assistance to nations most vulnerable and impacted by the effects of climate change.

During the week-long conference that took place at the UN Headquarters, Nalumango delivered the national statement in the General Debate plenary in which she called for enhanced international support in integration of Disaster Risk Reduction in the implementation of relevant sustainable development policies.

She has expressed solidarity on the Political Declaration of the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework which was adopted by consensus during the opening session.

Nalumango said the Zambian delegation is in support of the adopted text which would enable Member States to accelerate implementation of the Sendai Framework.

“Development partners, the UN System and Multilateral Development Banks need to support Landlocked Developing Countries’ efforts to develop tools to strengthen integrated disaster risk prevention, preparedness and response,” she said.

She assured Mr. Lacroix of Zambia’s policy of increasing support to the UN’s noble cause of maintaining world peace and security.
