President Hakainde Hichilema has appointed former vice president, Nevers Mumba, as Head of the Southern African Development Community Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) for the upcoming election in Zimbabwe.

Hichilema made the announcement on Monday through his Face book page, stating that the move aligned with the SADC’s principles for democratic elections.

“In our capacity as the Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security, during Zimbabwe’s election on August 23, 2023, we are pleased to announce the nomination of former vice president Mumba as the Head of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to Zimbabwe,” he said.

Hichilema expressed optimism for a peaceful and democratic electoral process in Zimbabwe.

He said the appointment of Mumba showcased the confidence of the Zambian people, reflecting his extensive experience in various senior roles he had held in the past.

“The SEOM deployment will take place from August 17 to August 31, 2023, coinciding with the SADC Summit in Angola where Zambia will assume the Chairmanship of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation,” Hichilema said.
