Government has launched the construction of the Blue Lagoon Road in Central Province, a critical infrastructure project aimed at boosting economic growth and development.

Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Charles Milupi, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony which was attended by several government officials on Wednesday.

The Blue Lagoon Road project involves the upgrade to bituminous standard of approximately 98 kilometers from Farmers Junction turnoff on Mumbwa Road to Muchabi Secondary and Primary Schools and 7 kilometers into the Blue Lagoon National Park.

“The project is expected to improve access to the Blue Lagoon National Park, a hidden treasure with vast tourism potential, and support the agricultural and livestock production potential of the area,” Milupi said.

He emphasized the importance of the said road in the government’s economic recovery and growth agenda.

Milupi stated that the road would create jobs, business opportunities, and earn the country much-needed foreign exchange through exports and tourism.

“The project is part of the government’s efforts to prioritize economic recovery and growth, and to promote efficiency in the movement and delivery of goods, services, and people,” he said.

Milupi stated that the government believed that good quality roads were a prerequisite for enhanced economic activity, growth, and poverty alleviation.

He directed the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation to ensure adherence to government’s policy on quality of works, cost, and timely delivery of projects, as well as to support government’s policy of job creation for locals and subcontracting to local contractors.
