The government has approved funding for the construction of two dormitories at Mwembeshi Secondary School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Chilanga district, Lusaka Province, to boost boarding facilities.
This was revealed when Lusaka Province Minister, Sheal Mulyata, visited the school alongside Head Teacher Rodgers Mwelwa, Chilanga District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Linny Longwe, area Member of Parliament Sipho Hlazo, and other stakeholders to discuss challenges facing the institution and explore solutions.
Mulyata assured that the government was committed to addressing the constraints at one of the few STEM schools in the province.
“As government we can guarantee you that the challenges you are facing here will be dealt with,” she said.
Head Teacher Mwelwa disclosed that the school currently had 48 pupils on full bursaries supported through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
He added that demand for enrollment continues to grow, creating pressure for additional boarding space.
“We applied for the construction of two dormitories and government has responded to construct the two for us,” Mwelwa said.
He explained that through Ministry of Education funding, infrastructure expansion works will soon commence to meet the growing demand brought about by the government’s free education policy.

Mwembeshi STEM Secondary School, according to Mwelwa, is one of the best-performing schools in Chilanga district, topping results in both Grade 9 and Grade 12 examinations in 2024.
He further praised the smooth transition to the new education curriculum, noting that teachers had aligned well to the desired reforms.
Mwelwa also expressed gratitude for the timely release of school grants, which had improved the quality of meals for pupils.
“Honorable Minister, our pupils are able to eat meat, fish, and other high-protein food within a week because of the grants provided timely by the government,” he said.
Additionally, he highlighted that water supply at the school had improved significantly with the installation of solar-powered boreholes funded through Chilanga constituency’s CDF.
