The Institute of Directors of Zambia (IoDZ) has commended the government for approving the National Corporate Governance Code, describing it as a milestone in strengthening ethical leadership and accountability in the country.
IoDZ president, Miriam Chiyaba, said the Institute was proud to have contributed to the development of the Code through consultations facilitated by the Ministry of Justice.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Chiyaba noted that the Institute ensured the perspectives of directors and corporate leaders were incorporated into the Code’s provisions.
“The Institute views this development as a milestone in strengthening Zambia’s corporate governance framework, fostering ethical leadership and aligning organisational conduct with sustainable development goals,” she said.
Chiyaba pledged that the IoDZ would work closely with government, regulators, industry bodies, and corporate entities to support the effective implementation of the Code through capacity building, advisory services, and ongoing engagement.
She added that the Code will guide boards and management on ethical conduct, safeguard stakeholder interests, and promote environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices for the benefit of communities and the environment.
Cabinet announced this week that it had approved the National Corporate Governance Code to enhance adherence to governance principles and strengthen the policy and regulatory framework.
“Adopting the National Corporate Governance Code will advance the promotion of ethical behaviour and standards by corporates in both the public and private sectors, and also enhance government’s governance framework on risk mitigation in companies and organisations,” Cabinet stated.
