Techbytes: Consumer body alerts Zambians to recall of Land Rover vehicles over airbag safety concern

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has alerted consumers in Zambia to a global recall affecting certain Land Rover Defender, Discovery and Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicles from model years 2020 to 2026.

The alert follows information received by CCPC from the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission regarding a recall initiated by Jaguar Land Rover due to a safety issue.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, CCPC Senior Public Relations Officer Florence Zaza, said the concern involved the connection to the driver’s airbag at the clockspring, which may experience fretting corrosion over time.

According to Zaza, this can lead to increased resistance in the driver’s airbag circuit and the fault has the potential to result in the airbag failing to deploy properly when required.

“The concern involves the connection to the driver’s airbag at the clockspring, which may experience fretting corrosion over time. This can lead to an increased resistance in the driver’s airbag circuit, potentially resulting in the airbag failing to deploy properly when required,” she stated.

Zaza said the recall affects 250,857 vehicles globally and had been implemented in countries including South Africa and the United States of America.

She further confirmed that 11 vehicles covered by the recall were imported into Zambia.

“The recall covers the 2022-2026 Land Rover Range Rover, produced between 8 July 2021 and 3 June 2026 with 69,685 units affected globally, the 2021-2026 Land Rover Discovery, produced between 14 September 2020 and 4 June 2026 with 83,620 units affected, and the 2020-2026 Land Rover Defender, produced between 16 October 2019 and 28 May 2026 with 97,552 units affected,” Zaza said.

She urged owners of the affected models to visit an authorised Jaguar Land Rover dealership or local importer/distributor where a proactive lubricant will be applied to the connector terminals at no cost.

Zaza said CCPC had engaged some Jaguar Land Rover importers and distributors operating in Zambia to facilitate the identification of affected vehicles and ensure consumers receive the necessary information and appropriate remedial action.

“CCPC reminds consumers that product recalls are an important consumer protection measure aimed at addressing identified safety risks and preventing potential harm. Consumers are therefore encouraged to take this recall notice seriously and respond promptly,” she stated.
