Betway, Zambia Premier League end K10 million partnership amid new betting tax burden

The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has announced the termination of its K10 million partnership with Betway Zambia, which began in 2023, just months after the government suspended its support to the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ).

ZPL Head of Communications, Christina Zulu, said Betway had played a significant role in supporting the growth of Zambian football through contributions to coaching programmes, club development, and fan engagement initiatives.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Zulu confirmed that Betway had communicated its decision to end the sponsorship, citing the heavy financial strain caused by the recently introduced government excise duty on all betting companies, which has rendered continued investment unsustainable.

“The ZPL acknowledges Betway’s contribution and professionalism throughout the partnership and remains committed to securing new strategic partners to sustain the continued development of Zambian football,” Zulu said.
