Former Information Minister and Patriotic Front (PF) senior member, Chishimba Kambwili, has reportedly been evacuated to South Africa for medical treatment.

A video clip published on Muvi Television’s social media platform on Monday showed the outspoken politician being assisted to walk at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka before departure.

While neither his family nor the government has issued an official statement, reports suggest that Kambwili was allowed to travel despite his passport having been previously withheld by authorities as part of his bond conditions.

At the weekend, PF acting president Given Lubinda appealed to the government to release Kambwili’s passport to allow him to seek medical attention abroad, following a visit to him shortly after his release from prison.

Kambwili, a member of the PF Central Committee, was released last Thursday after serving a five-month jail term for hate speech.

However, before his release, he was charged and arrested by the Immigration Department for failing to present himself to an immigration officer, but was later freed after meeting police bond conditions.
