Zambia Police have launched investigations into an incident involving a motorist captured on video verbally abusing a traffic officer in Lusaka and have appealed to the public for help identifying and locating the driver.

The appeal follows the circulation of a video on social media showing an altercation between a traffic police officer and the driver of a blue Mitsubishi Canter light truck along Kafue Road.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Police Spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha said the incident occurred on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at around 11:30 hours in the Carousel area along Kafue Road.

Kaitisha said traffic officers conducting routine patrols between 11:00 and 12:00 hours intercepted the vehicle after observing traffic offences.

“Upon inspection, the officers observed that the vehicle had expired road tax, contrary to Section 30(1) of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002, and an expired insurance certificate, contrary to Section 86(1) of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002,” she said.

She said the driver was informed of the offences by Constable Musonda Caphers and instructed to park the vehicle off the road.

“However, instead of complying with the lawful instructions, the driver became confrontational and directed abusive language towards the officer, as captured in the video currently circulating on social media,” Kaitisha said.

She said the officer remained calm and professional despite the provocation and did not engage the motorist in a confrontation.

The driver subsequently drove away from the scene in a northerly direction, while efforts to establish the vehicle’s registration number have so far been unsuccessful.

“The driver subsequently drove away from the scene in the northern direction. However, efforts to establish the vehicle’s registration number have so far been unsuccessful, making it difficult for the Police to identify and locate the motorist,” she said.

Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident, recognises the driver or has information about the vehicle to assist with the investigations.

Kaitisha also urged members of the public with additional video footage, particularly images showing the vehicle’s registration number, to share the information with the nearest police station.

She reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
