Michael Carrick has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Manchester United to take over as interim head coach until the end of the season, Sky Sports News has reported.

Negotiations were concluded late on Monday night after both parties resolved the remaining issues, paving the way for the former United midfielder to return to the Old Trafford dugout in a caretaker capacity.

The contractual details are now being finalised by lawyers on both sides, with Carrick expected to formally sign the agreement later.

Carrick arrived at United’s Carrington training complex on Tuesday morning, where he held talks with director of football Jason Wilcox.

Both the club and the coach are eager to complete the process swiftly to allow Carrick to begin preparations for training on Wednesday, when players return ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime Manchester derby.

Carrick’s backroom staff is expected to include experienced figures.

Gareth Southgate’s former England assistant coach Steve Holland will serve as Carrick’s number two.

They will be joined by former Middlesbrough assistant coach and ex-Leeds United defender Jonathan Woodgate, current United Under-21s coach Travis Binnion, and Jonny Evans, who rejoined the club during Darren Fletcher’s interim spell.

Fletcher, meanwhile, is expected to revert to a coaching role with Manchester United’s Under-18s.

The appointment would mark another chapter in Carrick’s long association with the club, where he enjoyed a highly successful playing career and later served on the coaching staff.

United are hopeful his familiarity with the club and calm leadership style will provide stability during a crucial phase of the season as they prepare for one of English football’s biggest fixtures.
