Known as one of England’s fiercest derbies, at the opening period City controlled possession, moving the ball through their technically gifted midfield, while United stayed compact, organised, and ready to hit on the break.
Despite City’s territorial dominance, it was United who created the clearer opportunities.
The breakthrough came shortly after the interval when united’s pressing forced a turnover deep in City’s half, allowing Mbeumo to collect the loose ball and fire low past the goalkeeper in the 65th minute.
Ten minutes later, Patrick Dorgu doubled the lead, calmly finishing another rapid counter-attack.
The goal cemented United’s advantage and intensified the tension in the derby atmosphere.
City pushed for a late response, but a goal was was overturned by VAR ruling it ‘offside’ while United’s defence held firm to secure only their second home league win over City in recent seasons.
Across the fixture’s history, United still hold more wins, though City have dominated many recent clashes, including a 3–0 victory earlier this season.
