The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security says a Joint Investigations Team has uncovered an alleged plot to interfere with Zambia’s electoral system ahead tomorrow’s General Elections.
The Ministry said the operation was intelligence-led and conducted by Defence and Security Agencies.
According to the statement issued in Lusaka on the eve of the country’s general elections, the operation resulted in the apprehension of several suspects linked to an alleged plan to disrupt the polls.
The Ministry said three former senior government officials had been arrested in connection with the matter and were currently in custody.
“Following a successful operation, the State has apprehended 3 former Senior Government Officials for allegedly providing technical services aimed at disrupting the electoral system. The trio are currently being held in lawful custody,” the statement read.
The Ministry further said it had extended invitations to three other individuals to assist with ongoing investigations, namely Japhen Mwakalombe, Mwila Kakana and Sensio Banda.
“The three were found in possession of a substantial amount of money, estimated at over K7.3 million, whose source and intended purpose are yet to be established,” the statement said.
Authorities added that the three responded through their lawyers, indicating they would only be available after the election date.
The Ministry also disclosed that sensitive military intelligence information was found on electronic devices seized from the group.
“Investigations have also identified sensitive military intelligence information on some of the electronic devices seized from the trio, raising further concerns regarding unauthorised access to protected information,” reads the statement.
In a separate development, the Ministry announced the arrest of a foreign national alleged to have been hired for cyber operations targeting state institutions.
“In a related development, the State has apprehended a Kenyan national identified as Michael Njuka, male aged 56, who is alleged to have been contracted to engage in cyber-crimes targeting the State,” the Ministry said.
The statement also addressed reports circulating on social media regarding alleged abductions, clarifying the status of two women previously mentioned in public discussion.

“Contrary to allegations circulating through various Media Platforms, the State has not abducted anyone in relation to ongoing investigations. In this regard, the former Ambassador, Martha Lungu and Journalist Hannah Katontoka, were apprehended to help with ongoing investigations and have since been released from lawful custody,” reads the statement.
With the country set to vote tomorrow, the Ministry said security agencies remain on high alert to protect the electoral process and national stability.
“As Zambia goes to the Polls on 13th August 2026, the Defence and Security wings remain on high alert to ensure that national peace, security and the rule of law are protected,” the statement said.
The Ministry urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding during the election period, and warned that anyone found interfering with national security or electoral systems will face legal action.
“The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security therefore, urges members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, and to refrain from engaging in activities that may threaten peace and stability before, during and after the elections,” it said.
The Ministry warned that persons found attempting to compromise national security, interfere with critical systems or engage in criminal activities would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
