An otherwise tense stakeholder meeting at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) national results centre briefly turned into a light-hearted affair on Saturday after two political leaders revealed they had rushed from their homes in unusual circumstances to attend the proceedings.
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president, Kasonde Mwenda, whose party is aligned with Brian Mundubile drew laughter from delegates when he complained that the commission had not provided timelines for its stakeholder engagement, saying he had been caught off guard.
“You are not giving us timelines. I was taking a shower and suddenly I had to rush here,” Mwenda said, moments after being asked to summarise his questions to the commission.
Before the laughter had subsided, National Restoration Party (NAREP) president, Ezra Ngulube, whose party is allied with the UPND, added his own humorous admission.

“Excuse me, I’ve just woken up from the bedroom to come here. I am in my pajamas,” Ngulube said, prompting more laughter from those in attendance.
Despite the lighter moment, Ngulube urged the commission to stop entertaining lengthy questions from political parties and instead focus on announcing the presidential election results.
The humorous exchange provided a brief break from the tense atmosphere that has characterised the wait for the declaration of the presidential election results at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, where political parties, observers and journalists have remained on standby for the ECZ’s announcement.
