The family of National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential spokesperson, George Chisanga, has confirmed that he has been missing since Friday and is now being held at Chelstone Police Station, but relatives have been denied access to see him.
Spokesperson, Emmanuel Chisanga said the family launched their own search after not hearing from Chisanga following events at the NRPUP leader’s residence in Kabulonga on 14 August.
Addressing the media on Saturday on behalf of the family, Chisanga said the vehicle their relative was using on Friday was later found at the residence of NRPUP leader Brian Mundubile.
He said following that, relatives moved from police post to police post and health center to health center on Saturday trying to locate him.
Chisanga said at about 22:00 hours on Saturday, the family received information that Chisanga was being detained at Chelstone Police Station, but they had not been informed of the charge against him.
“At about twenty-two hours we confirmed that he is being held at Chelstone Police Station for a charge we have not been aware of. This morning we attempted to see him but we are denied access,” he said.
Chisanga said the family was deeply concerned about Chisanga’s condition, particularly because no family member had been allowed to see him since his detention. He said the denial of access raises constitutional concerns.
“It is our appeal as a family that we be granted access to ascertain his condition and are fully alive to the fact that this is his constitutional right. Please help us to share this message,” he said.
Police have not issued a statement on the detention of Chisanga who is among several people the NRPUP had said went missing during an alleged raid at Mundubile’s residence on Friday night.
