Brentford thrash Tottenham 3-0 on opening day of Premier League

Big-spending Tottenham were stunned on the opening day of the Premier League season as Brentford ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Spurs splashed around £237m this summer — twice breaking their club record — to avoid a repeat of last season’s relegation scrap.

Four summer arrivals started: defenders Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and club-record £100m signing Sandro Tonali.

It didn’t help. Brentford were 2-0 up inside 33 minutes. Unmarked full-back Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing after being picked out by club-record signing Mamadou Sangare.

Sangare was excellent throughout and Brentford doubled the lead when Vitaly Janelt tapped in after Antonin Kinsky had saved Mathias Jensen’s effort.

Tottenham didn’t even manage a shot on target in the first half.

Roberto de Zerbi tried to change things at half-time, bringing on £85m signing Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur for Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall. But it got worse. Michael Kayode made it 3-0 after Sangare’s shot was parried into his path.

It could have been 4-0 when Bentancur fouled Kevin Schade and Michael Oliver awarded a penalty. But Igor Thiago hit the post and Spurs were spared further embarrassment.

In the end it was little consolation. Brentford looked slick, energetic and clinical, while Spurs — despite the huge outlay — looked miles off.
