Two juvenile pedestrians have died following a road accident in Luangwa District, while two others remain admitted to hospital.

The accident occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at around 18:00 hours in the Chitope area, off the D145 road in Luangwa District.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha said the driver was traveling from west to east when the accident occurred.

“The Zambia Police Service, through Luangwa Police Station, recorded the fatal road traffic accident involving a Toyota Sienta, registration number BBF 1662, driven by Nyawali Tembo, aged 25, of Ng’ombe Compound in Lusaka, and four juvenile pedestrians,” Kaitisha said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver failed to keep to his near-side lane and struck the four juvenile pedestrians who were walking along the left side of the road.

Kaitisha said as a result of the accident, one pedestrian sustained fatal injuries, while the other three sustained serious and slight injuries, and the driver escaped uninjured although the motor vehicle was extensively damaged.

“The deceased has been identified as Joyce Mulengekwa, aged 13, of Paumawa Village in Luangwa District,” she said.

She stated that the girl sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Katondwe Mission Hospital and her body has been deposited in the hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examination.

Kaitisha said the three surviving pedestrians were initially admitted to Katondwe Mission Hospital, with one sustaining serious injuries and two sustaining slight injuries.

She has since confirmed that one of the admitted juveniles has died while receiving treatment, bringing the death toll to two.

“The three survivors were receiving medical attention at Katondwe Mission Hospital. One of them who had sustained serious injuries has since died, bringing the total number of deaths to two,” Kaitisha said.

She said the two remaining survivors remain under observation at the same facility.

Kaitisha said the motor vehicle involved in the accident had been impounded at Chitope Police Post, where it was awaiting re-examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency and the Driver detained.

She urged all motorists to exercise caution, observe proper lane discipline and remain vigilant at all times to protect the lives of other road users, particularly pedestrians.
