Newcastle United were denied a famous victory after drawing 1–1 with FC Barcelona on Tuesday in their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first-leg clash at St James’ Park, according to Sky Sports.

Newcastle produced an energetic performance and looked the more dangerous side for long spells of the contest.

The breakthrough finally came in the 86th minute when Harvey Barnes finished from close range after a dangerous cross from Jacob Murphy.

According to Skysports, the goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters, who believed their team had secured a famous win against the Spanish giants.

Barcelona pushed forward desperately in stoppage time as they searched for a late equaliser.

Their opportunity arrived when Dani Olmo was brought down in the penalty area by defender Malick Thiaw, giving the visitors a crucial penalty.

Young star Lamine Yamal stepped up and converted the spot kick in the 90+6th minute, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way with the final kick of the match.

The dramatic equaliser means Barcelona head into the second leg in Spain with the tie level, while Newcastle will feel unlucky after coming so close to a historic victory.
