Bloggers of Zambia call for stronger safeguards to protect personal information

The Bloggers of Zambia have called for stronger safeguards to protect personal information amid the country’s ongoing digital transformation.

This is as the world marked Data Privacy Day 2026. The 2026 theme, “Put Privacy First,” highlights the need for individuals, institutions, and government agencies to prioritise privacy in digital innovation, governance, and service delivery.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Richard Mulonga, Director of Bloggers of Zambia, urged robust measures to address rising risks such as cybercrime, identity theft, unauthorised surveillance, and online exploitation, particularly affecting women, children, journalists, and other vulnerable groups.

“Putting privacy first is essential to building a safe, trusted, and inclusive digital Zambia. While the Data Protection Act provides a legal framework, legislation alone is not enough,” Mulonga said.

He stressed that effective data protection required awareness, compliance, enforcement, and a culture that respects privacy by design and by default. He further called on all data processors to demonstrate responsible governance and lawful processing practices.

Mulonga also urged the private sector—including digital platforms, telecoms, banks, and insurers—to fully comply with data protection obligations and place user privacy at the forefront of operations.

“I appeal to media organisations, content creators, and civil society to promote responsible data practices and educate citizens about their rights and risks in digital spaces,” he added.

He advised citizens to remain vigilant, informed, and proactive in protecting personal information both online and offline.
