Booing of Kwacha MP signals deeper resentment of ruling UPND, Banda argues

Former Kasenengwa Constituency lawmaker, Sensio Banda, says the recent booing of Kwacha Member of Parliament reflects deeper public discontent stemming from unfulfilled promises and a breakdown of trust.

Banda argued that the incident should not be viewed as an isolated event but as a political liability with potential to erode the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND)’s support base in its strongholds.

In an interview with Zambia Monitor, Banda said the booing was a sign that the UPND representative was increasingly disconnected from constituents.

He emphasized that dismissing such public anger would be a strategic mistake, warning that failure to acknowledge the underlying dissatisfaction risks trivializing a genuine crisis of confidence with severe political consequences.

“When a public representative is booed, the action transcends mere disapproval of an individual,” Banda said.

He stated that: “It is a potent political barometer of public frustration with the party they represent.”

Banda criticized UPND Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, for suggesting the booing targeted the MP and not the party, describing the view as a “fundamental misunderstanding of political dynamics.”

“A lawmaker is inextricably linked to their political party—they are the embodiment of its principles and promises in their constituency,” he argued.

According to Banda, downplaying such incidents could set the stage for political shocks in 2026.

“If this school of thought is allowed to persist as we approach the 2026 general elections, the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema are poised for a rude awakening,” he warned.
