The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has with immediate effect suspended the counting and announcement of results in the August 13, 2026 General Elections due to violence and security threats.
ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, (SC) said the Commission had noted with concern reports of violence during the counting and announcement of results in some districts.

Updating the nation on the state of the electoral process for 2026 in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday, Zaloumis claimed the violence was targeted at Poll staff and in some instances had resulted in the theft of marked ballot papers in ballot boxes.
“The decision was made “in view of the security situation and continued threats of violence” and was effected in accordance with Section 67 (3) of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016,” she said.
Zaloumis stated that the Commission would review the suspension within 24 hours.
