Brighton beat Newcastle 2-1, as Burnley climb out of drop zone

Danny Welbeck scored a brace as Brighton recorded a 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at the Amex Stadium.

Eddie Howe’s side appeared to have rescued a point when Nick Woltemade produced a sublime back-heel equaliser 14 minutes from time.

In a match reported by ESPN, Brighton had taken the lead in the first half through Welbeck, who clipped a lovely finish past Nick Pope after Newcastle’s midfield had seemingly evaporated.

The former England forward then showed composure and precision once more, bending home an 84th-minute winner as Fabian Hürzeler’s side claimed their third win of the season against Champions League opposition.

Newcastle might wonder how they lost a game they largely seemed to control, but Brighton’s clinical attacking play remained a constant threat.

Early on, Joelinton played the ball blindly inside his own half to the lurking Welbeck, who quickly laid it off to Georginio Rutter. Pope had to dive low to save Rutter’s effort heading for the corner.

Yankuba Minteh then broke down the right for Brighton but opted to pass instead of shooting, allowing Malick Thiaw to clear the danger.

Brighton lost Diego Gómez after 35 minutes following a collision with Pope, but the setback did not disturb their rhythm. Rutter drove through midfield before rolling the ball to Welbeck, who calmly finished between two central defenders to give Brighton a half-time lead.

After the break, Brighton wasted several chances as Yasin Ayari and others hesitated in front of goal, frustrating the home fans.

Newcastle nearly equalised when Bruno Guimarães’ powerful effort forced a fine save from Bart Verbruggen, followed by a VAR check for handball that went Brighton’s way.

They finally levelled through Woltemade’s moment of brilliance — a deft back-heel flick from Lewis Miley’s pass that nestled perfectly into the corner.

Guimarães could have sealed victory for Newcastle after Verbruggen flapped at a cross, but his shot was deflected over by Ayari. Brighton made them pay moments later when Welbeck calmly curled home his second goal after Dan Burn’s attempted block fell kindly to him.

Earlier, Loum Tchaouna marked his first goal for Burnley with a stunning strike that capped a vital 2-0 win over Leeds at Turf Moor.

It was a memorable first goal for the substitute, who struck against the run of play to punish a wasteful Leeds side as Scott Parker’s men won the battle of last season’s Championship top two.

According to Sky Sports, Burnley’s second Premier League win of the season began with Lesley Ugochukwu’s 18th-minute header from Kyle Walker’s pinpoint cross.

Leeds, who registered 19 shots, 42 touches in the opposition box and 69 percent possession, were left ruing missed chances — none more so than Brendan Aaronson’s one-on-one in the 32nd minute, which Martin Dubravka turned onto the post.

Jack Harrison went close twice in the second half, but Tchaouna’s 68th-minute strike from distance — arrowed into the top corner — sealed victory and lifted Burnley above Nottingham Forest, who sacked manager Ange Postecoglou on Saturday.
