Lusaka businessman, Sedrick Kasanda, currently on trial for espionage has been charged with aggravated robbery for allegedly stealing from Egyptian national Adel Botros a sum of US$5 million.
The State submitted to the Lusaka High Court that the detention of Kasanda at Twin Palm Police Station was justifiable as aggravated robbery was not a bailable offence.
It was alleged that on August 13, 2023, Kasanda acting together with unknown persons and armed with pistols robbed Botros of US$5 million at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) and also threatened to use violence.
The incident was reported to Police on August 30, 2023.
Botros was among the five Egyptians in the Jet plane carrying over US$5.6 million cash, suspected gold and weapons, that was seized by the joint investigations team.
Kasanda and four other Zambians were charged with espionage and trial was being held in camera.
Deputy Inspector, Arnold Kawangu, submitted to the High Court that it was a fact that Kasanda was arrested on February 26 and after preliminary investigations, charged with aggravated robbery.
“That all the neccessary procedures were followed and a docket was sent to the NPA to facilitate court appearance for the applicant herein,” Kawangu said.
Kasanda last week filed an application for habeas corpus contending that efforts by him to be brought before a competent court had been fruitless.
“My detention at Lusaka Twin Palm Police station is illegal and unconstitutional,” he said.
He cited the Attorney-General as the respondent in the matter.
