The Citizens First (CF) Party youth wing has accused The People We Want Party Spokesperson, Muhabi Lungu, of acting as a surrogate for the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) and undermining opposition unity ahead of the 2026 general elections.
CF National Youth Chairperson, Maxwell Chongu, charged in a statement on Thursday that Lungu’s repeated attacks on opposition leaders, particularly CF president Harry Kalaba, were driven by “hatred, envy and jealousy.”
“Opposition political party leaders must watch Muhabi Lungu closely. He may just be the UPND surrogate they have been looking for all this while, posing a threat to opposition unity ahead of 2026,” Chongu said.
He questioned why Lungu appeared more focused on criticizing opposition leaders rather than challenging the ruling party.
Chongu stressed that CF did not subscribe to politics of insults, character assassination, violence or disrespect, and accused Lungu of seeking attention by pushing for debates with fellow opposition leaders instead of the UPND.
“It’s correct to say only a UPND surrogate pretending to be in opposition would be excited to call for a debate with fellow opposition political party leaders to please his paymasters, instead of debating with the ruling party,” he said.
Chongu added that Kalaba and the CF had deliberately exercised restraint in responding to Lungu’s attacks to preserve opposition unity, which he said was the desire of most Zambians ahead of 2026.
“Let him find his way to our party secretariat on Elm Road in Woodlands. We have a very committed security watchman, Mr. Francis, who will be more than ready to engage him and quench his appetite to debate with fellow opposition leaders,” Chongu said.
Lungu recently criticized Kalaba for withdrawing from the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), arguing that the CF leader could not be regarded as a political giant while allegedly securing only “three votes” in by-elections.
