Chalala couple to face trial in High Court for alleged murder of maid

The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court on Monday committed a couple of Chalala who allegedly beat to death their 14-year-old maid to the High Court for trial.

In this matter, Smart Mumba, 36, and his wife Chanda Majory Lwembo, 30, are charged for murder of Janet Chola Mpundu.

The matter came up before Magistrate Kaunda Sakwanda, who committed the accused to the High Court for trial after the State presented a certificate of committal.

Particulars are that Mumba, a lecturer and Lwembo a Physician, on unknown dates but between August 28 and 30, were alleged to have killed the juvenile.

According to a police report,the couple took Mpundu’s body to the University Teaching Hospitals Police Post to obtain the Brought In Dead -BID- certificate over her death.

However, during inspection, police suspected foul play, as the victim’s body had multiple physical injuries and immediately investigations were instituted.

The probe revealed that the couple on August 29, 2023 had a physical confrontation with the deceased.
