Former Kanchibiya Member of Parliament, Sunday Chanda, has announced the withdrawal of his election petition challenging the outcome of the 2026 Parliamentary election, saying the decision was made in the interest of peace, development and the people of Kanchibiya.
In a lengthy statement issued on Saturday, Chanda said he had justiciable grounds to challenge the result and was strongly encouraged by supporters across the constituency to proceed with the legal challenge.
The former MP, who served one term from 2021, said leadership also required knowing when to prioritize collective interests over personal political ambitions and that after reflection and consultations, he had chosen a different path for the sake of continuity in Kanchibiya.
Chanda reflected on what he described as a good race over the last five years, during which he said he gave his time, energy and political capital to advance development in the constituency.
“I ran a good race. I fought a good fight. I served with everything I had,” he said.
The former lawmaker also defended his support for Bill 7 and the delimitation exercise, which split Kanchibiya into two constituencies but, however, argued that the move would double CDF resources and bring more investment to the area.
Chanda urged his successor, Sampa Muswema, to work with the Government, traditional and religious leaders, and all stakeholders to advance development.
“Development does not wear political regalia. A road does not belong to a political party. A school does not ask how its pupils voted,” he said.
Chanda also called for unity and an end to tribalism in Kanchibiya, stating that the constituency belongs to all Zambians regardless of tribe or political affiliation.
“I choose peace. I choose continuity of development. I choose to give the new Member of Parliament the opportunity to serve without the shadow of a prolonged political contest,” he said.
