Child drowns in Chilanga as motorcyclist dies in Lusaka crash

A one-year-old child, Precious Mutanga, has drowned in a water reservoir in Muchini Village of Chilanga District, while a motorcyclist has died in a separate fatal accident along Church Road at the Flyover Bridge in Lusaka, Police have confirmed.

Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said investigations had been launched into both incidents.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, Chilabi said police received the report of drowning around 12:30 hours from 37-year-old Riness Njovu, who reported that her niece had died.

“The Zambia Police Service in Chilanga District recorded an incident in which a one-year-old child, Precious Mutanga, is believed to have drowned. The incident occurred on February 6, 2026, around 11:00 hours in Muchini Village, Chilanga District,” he said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a passerby discovered the child’s body in a water reservoir approximately 50 centimetres deep. The reservoir collects water from a hand pump at the residence.

Chilabi said the child was found face down in the water. The passerby alerted a relative, who then reported the matter to the police. Officers visited the scene and confirmed the incident.

“Investigations have since been launched to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

The body has since been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary, awaiting postmortem examination.

In the separate Lusaka accident, a male motorcyclist—estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old—sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at UTH.

Police have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the crash.
“The motorcycle was extensively damaged, and the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation,” Chilabi said.

He appealed to the public to help identify the deceased motorcyclist, urging anyone with information to contact the nearest police station. The body is at UTH mortuary awaiting postmortem and identification.

Meanwhile, in Kabwe, a Mercedes-Benz Actros truck overturned along the Great North Road near Mulungushi University, injuring the driver and a passenger.

“In a separate incident, Police in Kabwe responded to a road traffic accident along the Great North Road near Mulungushi University on February 6, 2026, around 15:00 hours,” Chilabi said.

The Mercedes-Benz Actros ALF 1667, owned by the Bank of Zambia and heading toward Kabwe, sustained damage to its front cabin and container.

The driver and passenger were rushed to Kabwe Central Hospital for treatment and were later discharged.

Preliminary police findings suggest excessive speed may have contributed to the accident, as the driver reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and overturned.
