Bailiffs are expected to pounce on Chipata Golf Club for failure to settle the K34,000 land rate bill and the authorities have since turned to government for help.

Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) has since called on government through the Ministry of Sports to treat golf clubs as recreation facilities instead of being billed as commercial entities.

ZGU president Gleg Lubesha disclosed that the bailiffs from Chipata City Council are expected to visit the golf club on an outstanding bill of K34,000 meant for land rates.

“I was informed by ZGU General Secretary Edward Phiri about the impending visit by the Chipata City Council bailiffs on the club involving K34,000.

“It is good that the club has raised K15,000 and there was a balance of K19,000,” Lubesha said.

He said on Monday in Chipata that the government has been engaged through the Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu to have matter on land rates resolved by having golf clubs be treated as recreation facilities instead of being billed as commercial entities.

Lubesha indicated that the Minister had assured them that he would engage his counterpart for Local Government Garry Nkombo to look at the matter.

“However, this does not mean that clubs should stop paying council rates,”Lubesha said.
