The Chipolopolo boys edged Tanzania 1–0 in a tense FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, with Fashion Sakala’s 74th-minute strike sealing victory for Zambia.
The win keeps Zambia’s World Cup hopes alive, lifting them among the early frontrunners in their qualifying group.
It also extends their strong record against the Taifa Stars, underscoring the progress made under Grant’s leadership.
Played before a passionate Tanzanian crowd, the match was a cagey but entertaining contest, with both sides creating chances but failing to capitalize early on.
The breakthrough came midway through the second half when captain Lubambo Musonda launched a swift counterattack, threading a precise through ball to Sakala, who outran his marker and calmly slotted past the onrushing goalkeeper.
The goal sent the Zambian supporters into jubilation as their team tightened up defensively to hold off a late Tanzanian surge.
Defenders Kabaso Chongo and Benson Sakala were instrumental in keeping the hosts at bay.
Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant praised his team’s discipline and determination after the final whistle.
“We knew it would be a tough game away from home, but the boys showed character. Fashion took his chance well, and the defense was outstanding,” he said.
