Former Home Affairs Minister, Stephen Kampyongo, has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to direct his officials to stop calling some police officers as “Junkies”.

Inspector-General of Police, Graphael Musamba, had said that government would weed out “Junkies” in the service.

This was supported by Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, who referred to Jack Mwiimbu as Minister of “Junkie” police in Parliament on Friday.

During a media briefing in Lusaka on Friday after Parliament, Kampyongo said the description of some police officers as Junkies might dampen the moral among officer.

The Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament noted that this had serious repercussions in the security status of the country.

“I must state that the Patriotic Front (PF) government did not employ junkies but professional men and women who are serving the country deligently and this should not be taken away from them,” he said.

Mporokoso Member of Parliament, Brian Mundubile, who echoed Kampyongo’s sentiments went on to restate his call for Musamba to resign.

Mundubile said Musamba had shown signs of partisanship despite holding a respectable position which required a certain decorum and conduct.

“So is Musamba saying when the United Party for National Development (UPND) leaves office all the officers it has employed should be labeled as Junkies or cadres of the party by the new government,” he questioned.

The Parliamentarian expressed sadness that the men and women who were trained can be labeled as those who harrass people on the streets especially at night in the compounds.
