The Headteachers Association of Zambia (HAZ) has called for the incorporation of peace-building skills, conflict resolution in the school curriculum and empathy into teaching practices.
The association through its top official, Dean Wallace Kanchele, emphasized the importance of unity, respect, and tolerance in schools and communities.
Kanchele made the call in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday ahead of the commemoration of Heroes’ Day to honour the brave men and women who fought tirelessly for Zambia’s independence and freedom.
He stated that this would help students analyze the past, appreciate the present, and envision a brighter future for Zambia.
“Their sacrifices will forever be etched in our collective memory, inspiring us to build a nation that values peace, unity, and progress,” Kanchele said.
He noted the need to encourage students to become agents of positive change in their communities.
Kanchele stated that educators and school leaders, had a critical role in ensuring that the legacy of the national heroes continues to inspire future generations.
“We must reflect on the sacrifices made by our forebears and use those lessons to shape our actions and decisions today.
“By doing so, we will foster a culture of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect in our schools and communities,” he said.
Kanchele urged all Zambians to come together, and work towards a common goal of building a prosperous and peaceful nation.
“By integrating peace education into our curriculum, we will empower our students to become active contributors to building a more peaceful and harmonious society,” Kanchele stated.
