Hichilema pledges relentless search for yet-to-be retrieved miners, as nine receive mass burial

Nine miners have received mass burial at Chingola Central Cemetery.

This took place on Monday.

President Hakainde Hichilema who attended the burial procession directed intensified search for trapped miners still not retrieved.

The burial rites witnessed expression of grief and sorrow as caskets for the dead were wheeled to their graves.

So far, only 12 trapped miners have been retrieved out of 30, with only one rescued alive.

Hichilema who attended the burial procession assured the people of Chingola that the search would continue despite entering day 11.

“We are not going to abandon trapped miners, the search will continue until we retrieve everyone and we shall continue rendering a helping hand to the families of the affected miners as we look at a long term solution to avoid recurrence of the mine accident,” he said.

The President was accompanied to the burial service by Finance Minister, Situmbeko Musokotwane, Community Development Minister, Doreen Mwamba, and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe.

Others were Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister, Chipoka Mulenga, as well as Copperbelt Minister Elias Matambo.

Matambo said in the speech during the burial ceremony that the team would continue updating the nation regarding the rescue mission.

Mulenga who is Chingola Central member of parliament said President Hichilema had pledged another K10,000 to the affected families.
