‘I want to return home,’ Fugitive Tayali begs President Hichilema to allow him return to Zambia for medical treatment

Fugitive Economic and Equity Party (EEP) leader, Chilufya Tayali, has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to allow him to return home and access medical treatment in the country instead of sending him to prison for his alleged mutiny case.

Tayali who has been reportedly diagnosed with Appendicitis while in Malaysia, is facing a charge of mutiny. However, he has been absent from the court leading to the judge to issue three bench warrants for his arrest.

He also faces the case of harassing Chief Munokaliya Siloka Mukuni of the people of Kazungula district in the Southern province on his Facebook page, claiming responsibility for the 2020 gassing incidents.

The EEP leader is facing another case in which he was slapped with one count of expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt for persons because of race contrary to Section 70(1) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Tayali announced that he had been diagnosed with Appendicitis which had raptured and was due for surgery, but that the cost of the medical treatment was beyond his reach.

“I am on my way home after doing a few tests at the hospital, unfortunately the tests are not conclusive because I ran short of money. I need to do some more tests which will cost me about K81,000,” he wrote.

In his plea to President Hichilema, Tayali who exiled himself due to the alleged mutinous comments and other cases, acknowledged his short comings in his public discourse, engagement which had led to him coming in conflict with the law.

“I am in pain and I feel sad that I am going back home where I live alone. I am scared, what if I get worse, who will help me?

But Mr. President, I seek you indulgence, I don’t want to go to jail for speaking for people or doing politics, but, if I can’t be forgiven then I would rather die here,” he said.

Tayali lamented that undergoing surgery in Malaysia would cost him about K273, 021 and that this was a lot of money which he did not have.

He agreed that, at times, his political strategies may not be the best, but that every politician knew better about such, if they wanted to be effective and convincing in politics.

“I have made this decision, to come home, after interacting with the doctor.

“You are risking walking out of those doors, it’s urgent do the other tests, and so that we rule out surgery which is highly plausible depending on what the other tests reveals”, the Doctor said,” according to Tayali.

He added that the Doctor in Malaysia wrote a letter in his own handwriting so that in case of anything, he would not be held responsible for negligence.

“Now, when I think of it, especially if I have to undergo surgery which cost me about K273,021. This is a lot of money and I am sure I can pay much less back home.

“So, coming back home, would be the best solution but Mr. President, I don’t want to go to jail, I am not a criminal neither did I embezzle,” Tayali said.

“I don’t regret most of the things I have done or said, but I can’t say I have been right in everything. There times, when I got it wrong, but it was not out of malice or that someone hired me. I have done everything out of conviction and given a chance, I would still do the same,” Tayali wrote.
