Industries, homes return to electricity woes, as ZESCO announces cuts in power supply to three hours daily

0

ZESCO Limited has announced that it is facing severe power generation constraints, leaving the utility able to supply electricity for only three hours per day.

In a statement issued on Monday, the company said the situation had been worsened by limited access to regional power imports, putting further strain on Zambia’s interconnected power system.

“ZESCO informs its customers that it is operating under a severely constrained power generation situation. An under-pressure interconnected power system has equally affected the Corporation’s access to regional imports,” the statement read.

The power utility explained that the development had disrupted normal load management schedules, forcing adjustments to electricity rationing across the country.

“This has forced disruptions to our load management schedules and hours of supply. Consequently, the electricity rationing schedules for the week, 2 to 8 November 2025, reflect this variability to prevent system collapse as we work towards restoring stability and avoiding irreparable damage to infrastructure,” according to the statement.

ZESCO assured customers that efforts were underway to stabilize the grid, emphasizing that all possible measures were being taken to improve generation and transmission.

“ZESCO assures its customers and the public that it continues to work hard and is doing everything possible within its means to resolve the challenges affecting the generation and transmission system and restore better service through improved electricity supply,” the statement read.

While the utility reaffirmed its commitment to follow published load-shedding schedules, it cautioned that faults, vandalism, and theft could cause additional unplanned outages.

“ZESCO remains committed to adhering to the published schedules but faults and other unplanned outages, including those caused by vandalism and theft of our electrical installations, may disrupt these plans. The Corporation will endeavor to promptly communicate such disruptions to the affected customers via SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook, and other media channels,” it said.

The company also urged members of the public to report power outages lasting more than 24 hours and to assist authorities in combating the rising cases of vandalism targeting power installations.

“Customers are urged to report any outage lasting longer than 24 hours and to help curb the high levels of vandalism and theft by reporting any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies,” ZESCO stated.
