Kafubu Water infrastructure in Roan Township vandalized, Minister Nzovu orders probe

Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, has condemned the continued vandalization of critical infrastructure belonging to the Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company Limited (KWSC) on the Copperbelt.

Nzovu expressed regret after the main electric cable connecting a transformer to the Section 3 Sewerage Pumping Station in Roan Township, Luanshya, was vandalised and stolen in the early hours of March 28, 2026.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, the minister said the incident had disrupted the pumping of wastewater from Roan Township to the treatment plant located on the outskirts of the area.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the perpetrators overpowered and restrained the security guard on duty before stealing the electricity cables.

“The stolen cable is a critical component that supplies power to the 3 Gate Sewerage Pump Station machinery, which serves Roan Township,” Nzovu said.

He added that the matter had been reported to the police and investigations were underway, though no arrests had been made so far.

Nzovu condemned the act as criminal and retrogressive, stressing that the government was treating the matter with utmost seriousness and would ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.

“Members of the public are urged to desist from vandalising essential infrastructure. Such acts are destructive, undermine service delivery, and result in significant financial losses, as these facilities are developed and maintained using public resources,” he said.

He assured residents of Luanshya, particularly those in Roan Township, that KWSC had commenced urgent measures to replace the stolen cables and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
