The Republican Progressive Party (RPP) has formally lodged a complaint against lawyer Makebi Zulu before the Legal Practitioners Committee of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), citing allegations of professional misconduct.
RPP Secretary General, Daniel Chungu, said the party took this step in response to Zulu’s recent public conduct, particularly in relation to the funeral arrangements of the late former President Edgar Lungu.
Speaking to journalists in Lusaka on Monday at the LAZ offices, Chungu said Zulu’s public statements and actions fall short of the decorum and ethical standards expected of legal practitioners in Zambia.
“As a party committed to upholding the rule of law and democratic values, we found it necessary to raise this complaint in order to:
“Safeguard the integrity of the legal profession, which must remain impartial, professional, and above political manipulation; Call upon LAZ to offer clear and consistent guidance to all legal practitioners on appropriate public conduct, especially when handling matters of national importance; Ensure that young and upcoming lawyers understand the boundaries of legal practice, particularly the distinction between legal representation and political activism,” he said.
Chungu stressed that the legal profession is a cornerstone of justice and national unity, and that any conduct which risks undermining its credibility must be addressed decisively.
“We trust that the Legal Practitioners Committee will handle this matter with the seriousness it deserves, and we hope our concerns will be addressed promptly,” he said.
