A lightning strike has claimed the life of Sefania Shampande, a 60-year-old resident of Chingola, in an incident that occurred on the night leading into Friday.

According to police, another woman, identified as Regina Kanchini, also aged 60, survived the lightning strike but was left unconscious.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Mwala Yuyi, said Shampande was struck while standing in the doorway of her house during a rainstorm at around 15:00 hours on March 19, 2026.

“Upon witnessing the incident, the neighbour to the deceased quickly went out to organize other neighbours behind the deceased’s house and found Regina Kanchini lying on the floor in her house in an unconscious state,” he said.

Yuyi said the neighbour immediately alerted others along with the area councillor, who rushed to the scene and helped evacuate both victims to Minsenga Clinic.

Unfortunately, Shampande was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Kanchini—who still had a detectable pulse—was referred to Nchanga North General Hospital for further treatment.

Police investigations revealed that lightning had struck the foundation of Shampande’s house from behind, travelled through the wall and exited through the roof, damaging the roofing iron sheets.

Yuyi said Kanchini was later found to be in stable condition, though she appeared disoriented.

“No visible injuries were observed on the survivor but she complained of a painful left hand and painful neck,” he added.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary at Nchanga North General Hospital awaiting further investigations.
