The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has warned traders against stocking and selling expired products, cautioning that offenders would face stern legal action under the Public Health Act and the Food Safety Act.
The warning follows the Council’s official disposal of assorted expired and unsafe goods seized during a joint operation in Matero in late 2024.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, said the confiscated items included expired groceries and other consumables discovered in a Matero warehouse.

She explained that the operation involved the LCC Public Health Department, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Council police, and the Zambia Police Service.
“The presence and sale of expired consumables pose serious public health risks and constitute a direct violation of the Public Health Act, which strictly prohibits the sale or distribution of expired food products,” Mwamba said.
Mwamba emphasized that safeguarding public health remained a top priority for the Council and warned that any trader found selling expired products would be prosecuted.
She further reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to ensuring a safe trading environment and protecting communities from the harmful effects of expired and unsafe food products.
