Manchester United’s winless run stretches to six after Leeds draw

Manchester United’s winless run extended to six matches in all competitions after Leeds United held Michael Carrick’s side to a draw at Elland Road.

The result dealt another blow to Carrick, whose team arrived at the home of their long-standing rivals after a turbulent week in which defender Lisandro Martinez was fined for criticising the club’s hierarchy.

Martinez started in a fiery encounter that produced more bookings than clear chances in the opening stages, with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and Leeds’ Gabriel Gudmundsson both shown yellow cards for mistimed challenges, according to the BBC.

The game gathered momentum before the half-hour mark, with Bryan Mbeumo missing an unmarked header for Manchester United shortly after goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a full-stretch save to deny Nico Elvedi.

Mbeumo made amends 10 minutes before half-time, giving the visitors the lead after battling past James Justin to meet Youri Tielemans’ excellent pass into the box.

However, Leeds drew level shortly after the break when Dominic Calvert-Lewin beat Mbeumo to a loose ball after Tarik Muharemovic had met a corner.

Fernandes later fired wide for Manchester United, while Leeds’ Anton Stach failed to keep a first-time effort down as neither side managed to find a winner.

The draw extended Manchester United’s winless run to six games in all competitions for the first time since the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Manchester United remained 13th in the table, while Leeds stayed seventh, three points ahead of Carrick’s side.

Leeds also maintained their unbeaten home record in all competitions since March.
